Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Porchlight Project?

The Porchlight Project is a community-based initiative that creates welcoming spaces for survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) and sexual violence. Local businesses across Buncombe County participate by offering a discreet, secure place where survivors can use a phone to contact crisis services or wait for help. The project is a collaboration between Our Voice, Helpmate, and Buncombe County.

How does the Porchlight Project work?

Participating businesses display a Porchlight Project sign to let survivors know they can access help. When a survivor enters a Porchlight location, staff can offer a phone or discreet place to wait for crisis response. The businesses do not need to provide additional security, and all employees receive training on how to respond discreetly and compassionately.
